We have a wide range of students using the courses, from age 6 to retirement age! We've intentionally made these lessons short (the average lesson length is 4 or 5 minutes), so that young or old can handle them easily, one step at a time.

Regarding instruments, younger students (6-7 yrs old) typically do better starting on the ukulele, for three main reasons:

  1. The ukulele has only four strings. This makes everything simpler, from playing a simple melody to forming the most common chords.

  2. The ukulele has nylon strings, which are easier on the fingertips than the steel strings found on most guitars.

  3. The ukulele is smaller. This makes it easier for children to hold and play, and makes it a less intimidating instrument altogether.

Students aged 7 or 8 and up are ready for guitar! Just make sure to size the guitar appropriately. (See This Article for guidance on guitar sizes.)

As you might expect, younger students will need more parental involvement/oversight, especially in the first few weeks of lessons. After this, most young students are able to navigate the lessons on their own :)
